A plucky Manukau City took Western Springs to extra time in the first round proper of the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup before losing 3-1 to the 2007 champions on Sunday.

Two divisions below Springs in Auckland’s first division, Manukau took a first half lead against the Northern League side through Olga Sagatu, although a second half strike from Lilly Rose Dyer kept the visitors alive.

A second to Dyer in extra time and a goal to Ruby Kleyer eventually broke the back of Manukau’s challenge and earned springs a place in next week’s draw for the second round.

Three Kings United enjoyed a far easier time against non-Northern League opposition smashing 10 unanswered goals past Ellerslie with Football Fern Annalie Longo leading the way with a four goal haul.

In Christchurch, a Hannah Wong hat trick inspired Cashmere Technical to a 6-0 win over Halswell on Saturday, while last season’s runners up Coastal Spirit continued their charge towards the August 28 final with a 3-1 home win over FC Twenty 11 and further south Dunedin Technical got the Football South region underway with a 2-0 win over Queenstown Rovers.

Hibiscus Coast were the biggest victors on the weekend, dispatching Kerikeri High School 14-0 with Natalie Cyra and Lauren Daly both grabbing hat tricks to earn the Coast a tie against defending champions Glenfield Rovers in the next round on Queens’ Birthday weekend.

In the Capital, Rosie Morgan scored twice in extra time to give Palmerston North’s Valeron Wanderers a 3-2 win over Marist. Morgan netted in the 101st and 104th minutes for Valeron who then conceded a penalty with nine minutes remaining to set up a nervy finish.

The ASB Women’s Knockout Cup is played along federation lines until the quarterfinals and becomes an open national draw at the semi final stage.
